Angel up for treble tilt

- By MARCUS TOWNEND

BRONZE ANGEL is in ‘great shape’, according to trainer Marcus Tregoning, ahead of his attempt to become the first horse to win the Betfred Cambridgeshire three times.

The seven-year-old has not run since being unplaced in the Group Three Earl Of Sefton Stakes at the same Newmarket track in April.

But Tregoning (below) does not feel the long absence will be a negative for his 25-1 shot. The gelding was away for almost a year before a prep-race two weeks preceding his 2014 Cambridgeshire win.

Tregoning said: ‘He has not been injured but we turned him away when the horses were not right in the spring. He has been working well and is in great shape, but it will not be easy against younger, improving horses.’

Bronze Angel, who won his first Cambridgeshire in 2012, will be running in what is traditionally one of the toughest handicaps of the season.

Seven horses have triumphed in the race twice and there are two other previous winners in Saturday’s line-up — Estimate (2013) and Third Time Lucky (2015).

Favourite at 8-1 is the John Gosdentrained Sacred Act, a recent winner at Sandown. FLYING US filly Lady Aurelia, ridden by Frankie Dettori, is set to clash with Frankel’s daughter and Lowther Stakes winner Queen Kindly in Saturday’s Group One Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. Charlie Appleby’s Gimcrack Stakes winner Blue Point heads the entries for the Middle Park Stakes.
