FIRST Minister Nicola Sturgeon formally reopened Scotland’s last major steelworks yesterday.
The Dalzell plate mill in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, was mothballed by Tata Steel in 2015 with the loss of 225 jobs.
But in April it was taken over by Liberty House, which now employs 120, including many former workers. Within 18 months, the firm hopes to raise this to 200 and contribute around £15million a year to the economy.
After a piper led a group of dignitaries through the plant, Miss Sturgeon said: ‘I can’t really adequately sum up in words how delighted I am to be here.’
