Scots train that’s one of the world’s best
IT not only passes through spectacular scenery, it transports you to a gentler age.
Now the railway journey through the Highlands on The Royal Scotsman has been named among the best in the world.
Travel magazine Wanderlust placed the trip behind only The Imperial Russia from Moscow to Beijing and The Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver.
‘Some may insist on taking the high road in Scotland,’ Wanderlust said, ‘but those in the know take the train.
‘The luxurious Royal Scotsman is the perfect way to enjoy the spectacular Highlands scenery, single malt in hand. Settle down in a comfortable sofa or armchair, or step out on to the open air veranda of the observation car as castles, villages and glens glide past.’
The train’s nine carriages have been refurbished and the luxurious sleeping cars have mahogany panelling, wall candle lights and prints of clan chieftains.
The magazine said: ‘You’ll complete a 720mile loop through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery, with opportunities to take part in traditional Highland pastimes like fishing, clay pigeon shooting and whisky-tasting.
‘Back on board, you’ll dine on world-class cuisine, rich with Scottish specialities. There are never more than 36 guests, so a high level of personal service is assured. What makes it special? The scenery and the service.’
But travelling in style isn’t cheap. The train’s Highland Journey, over three days and two nights, costs from £2,720 per person.
The rest of Wanderlust’s seven ‘unique rail journeys’ were China by high-speed train, the Polar Express in Scandinavia, Iran by private train and Rovos Rail’s Pride of Africa.
