Hope Queen Mary painters used Crown!

- By Maureen Sugden

MOST of us find painting the spare room a bit of a bore.

So spare a thought for the poor workers restoring the Queen Mary to her former glory.

The rusting hull has been cleaned up and treated to a coat of paint, thanks to the Friends of TS Queen Mary charity, whose patron is Robbie Coltrane.

Launched in 1933, she is the last remaining Clyde-built steamer and is returning to Glasgow for the first time in nearly 40 years.

The historic ship – in its day the largest leisure craft ferrying passengers ‘doon the watter’ – will stay in the city over the winter, thanks to a deal struck with the Glasgow Science Centre.

The steamer will be towed from Greenock to Glasgow in the coming weeks, returning to the city for the first time since 1977. The charity needed a safe place to berth the ship over the winter as her current home in Greenock is required for other work.

Trustee Iain Sim said: ‘We’re sure the people of Glasgow will look after her well and will be chuffed to have her back.’

David McQueen of the Glasgow Science Centre said: ‘We are delighted to be assisting the Friends of the TS Queen Mary.’

The Queen Mary is set to remain in Glasgow until early 2017. The charity is exploring options for a permanent home once she has been restored.

It hopes to raise £2million to transform her into an arts and culture venue.
