HAMPDEN HEARTACHE THE PITTODRIE MEN CAN’T SHAKE...

-

ABERDEEN will attempt to end a 16-year Hampden hoodoo tomorrow when they face Morton in the Betfred Cup semi-final. The Dons won the 2014 League Cup final at Celtic Park, but haven’t tasted success at the national stadium since April 9, 2000 when they beat Hibs 2-1 in the Scottish Cup semi-final thanks to goals from Arild Stavrum and Andy Dow. Since then, they have lost all of their six games at Hampden and have conceded four goals on four of those six occasions. Here’s their record since that last-four victory 16 years ago under Ebbe Skovdahl...

2000 — Scottish Cup final: RANGERS 4 ABERDEEN 0

The game was realistically over after three minutes when Dons keeper Jim Leighton was carried off with a fractured jaw. Aberdeen had no sub keeper on the bench and Robbie Winters (right) could do little to prevent the inevitable goal flood.

2011 — Scottish League Cup semi-final: CELTIC 4 ABERDEEN 1

The Dons were blown away by a 33-minute first-half blitz. Goals from Kris Commons (below), Charlie Mulgrew, Thomas Rogne and Anthony Stokes saw the vast majority of the 12,000 Aberdeen fans leave Hampden by the interval. Scott Vernon netted a consolation.

Andrew Considine was sent off (above) in the first half, but Jamie Langfield saved Anthony Stokes’ penalty. However, the floodgates opened in the second half and goals from Charlie Mulgrew, Joe Ledley, Kris Commons and Shaun Maloney made it more misery for the Dons.

2008 — Scottish Cup semi-final: QUEEN OF THE SOUTH 4 ABERDEEN 3

Arguably the worst result in the club’s history. Three times the Dons hit back, only to let the First Division side go in front again every time. Former Don John Stewart (left) netted the winner against Jimmy Calderwood’s side.

2012 — Scottish Cup semi-final: HIBS 2 ABERDEEN 1

Easter Road cult figure Garry O’Connor put the men from Leith into the lead after just three minutes, but Rory Fallon’s looping volley levelled matters. It seemed set for extra time before a certain Leigh Griffiths popped up with the winner with just five minutes remaining (below).

2015 — Scottish League Cup semi-final: DUNDEE UTD 2 ABERDEEN 1

On-loan defender Donervon Daniels headed Aberdeen into the lead after the break and it seemed the hoodoo was about to be smashed. However, they blew it again when current Dons defender Callum Morris equalised and Nadir Ciftci (right) netted a late winner.
