Man and girl, 2, in 40ft plunge from tenement flat

- By David Meikle

A MAN fell from a top floor window of a block of flats while holding a two-year-old girl yesterday.

Both were taken to hospital following the horrifying 40ft fall from the window of the tenement flats.

The man fell while clutching a girl believed to be his daughter. He is in a serious condition in hospital while the toddler’s condition was described as stable.

Police have launched an investigation after emergency services were called to the scene in Govanhill, Glasgow.

One neighbour who did not wish to be named, said: ‘I just can’t believe this has happened, they are a lovely wee family.

‘They always seemed so happy and the wee girl is just gorgeous, a really happy child.

‘I was at my work when I heard about it and just couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Hopefully they are alright but it must have been scary for them all.

‘It’s the last thing that you expect to happen on your doorstep. I’m sure everybody in the close will be stunned to hear what has happened to them.’

Last night, one female police officer stood guard at the entrance to the block of flats. Forensics officers had earlier carried out an examination of the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘Around 12.35pm on Monday, police were called to a report of a 38-year-old man and a two-yearold girl having fallen from the window of a flat in Calder Street, Glasgow.

‘They have been taken to hospital where they are being treated for their injuries.

‘Hospital staff describe his condition as serious and the girl’s condition is described as stable.

‘Police inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.’
