WITH a glass of champagne in one hand and her other arm around her youngest son, it is a picture that makes it clear exactly how high newly-crowned world number one Andy Murray is flying.

Proud mother Judy posted the snap taken on a private jet on her social media last night, with the caption: ‘Mission accomplished.’

The 57-year-old was as thrilled as could be with Murray’s amazing cap to a momentous year as he beat American John Isner to win the Paris Masters yesterday, just hours after making history by taking the top spot.

On Saturday, the 2 -year-old Scot entered the record books by becoming the first British singles player to reach the summit of world tennis since computerised rankings began in 1 73.

His achievement will be confirmed today when the rankings are officially published and comes after a trailblazing period in which Murray claimed his second Wimbledon title in June, defended his Olympic singles title in Rio in August and helped Great Britain to its first Davis Cup win since 1 36 last November.

When Milos Raonic withdrew from his Paris semi-final with an injury, Murray took the number one position, ending Novak Djokovic’s 122-week reign.

Yesterday the Scot, who also became a father in February, said: ‘To my team and my family, this has been an incredible journey to get to the top of the rankings. I could not have done it without you. They make a lot of sacrifices to allow me to compete and travel the world.’

Murray, who will now prepare for next week’s World Tour Finals in London, added: ‘It’s been a great year and I want to try and finish it as well as I can.’

Judy said: ‘I don’t think anybody works any harder than he does and I think this is just reward for his perserverance, his patience and his resilience.’

Murray’s actor friend Kevin Spacey tweeted: ‘Never playing with you again! How am I supposed to beat the #1 singles player in the world?’

Sir Chris Hoy joined in, calling Murray ‘Scotland’s greatest ever sportsperson’, while the Kensington Palace Twitter feed for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry said: ‘Congrats Andy Murray – Wimbledon champ, Olympic Gold, and now #1! What a year!’

Former world number one Roger Federer declared: ‘We have a new King in town. Congrats Sir Andy Murray.’
