MAKE THIS THE WEEK YOU...

DIGITALLY DETOX

- HELEN McGINN

BUY AN ALARM CLOCK

ONE in four of us spend more time online than we do asleep. And checking your phone just before you go to sleep is likely to keep you awake longer.

Remove temptation by not using your phone as an alarm clock.

BREAK THE HABIT

WE CHECK our phones 200 times a day, on average — mostly out of habit. By identifying these times we can at least try to break the habit. If it’s on the bus, take a book instead. Disable notifications for emails and social media to reduce the temptation.

GET A ‘DUMBPHONE’

HAVING a smartphone that can do just about anything means you’ll use it for just about everything — all the time. Instead opt for a ‘dumbphone’. Eddie Redmayne has reportedly made the move, saying: ‘It’s a reaction against being glued permanently to my iPhone.’ Last year, Punkt launched the MP01 (£229, punkt.ch) that only lets you call and text. Or try a basic Nokia 105 (£24.99, carphone warehouse.com).

USE AN APP (YES, REALLY)

WITH ShutApp, you can set times when you don’t want to use your phone — it notifies friends for you, too!

INTRODUCE FORFEITS

PHONE stacking is a great way to keep meal times tech-free. Place gadgets in a pile and impose a forfeit for the first person who reaches for their phone.
