HORSEY RUNS OLESEN CLOSE IN £1m CHARGE

- RIATH AL-SAMARRAI reports from Antalya

DAVID HORSEY bolted out of the gate but fell just short of a remarkable £1million comeback at the Turkish Airlines Open yesterday. The Englishman produced a brilliant fightback in the fourth round after starting the day a full seven shots behind Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen. With a big prize on the line in an event shunned by Rory McIlroy and other leading names over terrorism fears, Horsey produced a stunning front nine of 29 and at one stage reduced the deficit to one shot. But after making such a fast start, the 31-year-old slowed up on the straight, eventually carding a 65 to finish on 17 under, three shots behind the player known on Tour as Thunderbear. Horsey, a four-time winner on the European Tour, was largely unheralded coming into the event but left with the biggest cheque of his career after pocketing the £500,000 second prize. He said: ‘I’ve got a lot of confidence from this. It’s probably as relaxed as I’ve felt playing in contention. If I can just tidy up in a few areas, there’s no reason why I can’t continue contending in the near future. ‘I thought if I could get to 20 under that would be a reasonable effort and put a little bit of pressure on Thorbjorn. I wanted to put pressure on early doors and, thankfully, was able to do that. I just ran out of steam.’ Danny Willett leaves Turkey in a far more downcast mood and apparently no closer to fixing his swing. He was hammered by his inconsistencies again yesterday with a 75 that left him second behind Henrik Stenson in the Race to Dubai, with only two events to go.
