Adam sticks the boot in over his national exile

- By BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

CHARLIE ADAM last night hit out at Gordon Strachan’s squad selection and apparent lack of communication as he vented his frustration at his continued exile from the Scotland set-up. The Stoke City midfielder has played just 72 minutes of competitive football under Strachan and has not represented his country since coming on in a 1-0 friendly win against Qatar in June 2015. The former Rangers playmaker also claimed his former Ibrox team-mate Alan Hutton, now at Aston Villa, chose to retire from international football last week because Hearts right-back Callum Paterson is ahead of him in the pecking order. And Adam also questioned the

Scotland boss for regularly overlooking Rangers’ Lee Wallace — now expected to start against England after injuries to Andrew Robertson and Kieran Tierney — and questioned his treatment of Robertson and Oliver Burke. Asked by Radio 5 Live if he knew why he was not in the Scotland squad for the World Cup qualifier at Wembley, Adam said: ‘No. Do I think certain faces don’t fit? 100 per cent, without a shadow of a doubt. Do I know why? No, there’s no communication, nothing. I just think certain players’ faces don’t fit and that’s why he’s not picking them. ‘I saw the other day that Alan Hutton has retired. He’s only retired because he knows he’s not going to get a game. He’s still the best right-back we have — so why is he not playing? ‘Lee Wallace has been playing really well at left-back for Rangers and he couldn’t get in the squad. Andrew Robertson played really well against Malta and got dropped against Slovakia. ‘We have a kid (Burke) who goes to Leipzig for £15million and wasn’t even in the squad after supposedly playing well against Malta. I don’t understand it.’
