Festive chocs up to twice the price – in a smaller box

- By Sean Poulter Consumer Editor

BUYING anything in smaller quantities usually means that we’ll end up paying more.

Chocolates are no exception to the rule – but for some treats the cost can double, according to Which?

The consumer group found that a 1.32kg tub of Quality Street worked out at 53p per 100g at Asda.

But a 265g box was nearly twice as expensive, at £1.02 per 100g. Products such as Cadbury Heroes and Celebrations from Mars also came out more expensive by weight in smaller packages.

The findings come as Britons begin to fill up their larders with sweet treats in the run-up to Christmas.

It suggests shoppers would be better off buying in bulk – although it is at odds with pledges by the food industry to help the nation cut their sugar intake.

Richard Headland, the editor of Which? magazine, said: ‘As the festive shopping

season gets into full swing people are starting to stock up on their Christmas treats and snacks.

‘Chocolate boxes are a firm favourite and this snapshot research shows that it can be worth comparing prices by weight to save money at this time of year.’

Not every supermarket in the test was selling the same chocolates in both large and small packs, so it was not possible for researchers to make a comparison across all the products. Pack size also varied between chocolate brands.

Among the findings, Which? found that Asda charged £1.08 per 100g for Roses in a small pack, against 59p when sold in a larger pack.

Smaller packs of Celebrations at Morrisons were £1.11 per 100g, versus 63p for the larger size. Sainsbury’s charged £1.01 versus 57p on Quality Street.

The differential on Heroes at Tesco was £1.07 against 72p.
