Fury after revellers ‘abandon’ drunk girl

- By Kate Pickles

VOLUNTEERS who cared for a drunken student have criticised the friends who ‘abandoned her’.

Cheltenham Guardians found the vulnerable girl, named only as Emily, on Friday night after she had been sick over herself. She was unable to remember where she was staying.

The community group, which patrols the Gloucestershire town at weekends, tried to track down her friends. But rather than rush to her aid, the friends found her state ‘funny’, mocked the volunteers and failed to turn up and help her.

After looking after Emily for more than two hours the good Samaritans had no choice but to call an ambulance. In a letter on Facebook, shared 1,800 times by last night, the group accused her friends of deserting Emily and wasting resources.

The message said: ‘We cared for her unconditionally while you purposefully gave us the runaround, hindered our progress and despite our pleas you never came. I hope you read this and understand you tied up valuable resources for over two hours and forced the attendance of an emergency ambulance at a cost to the NHS of £300. Most of all, you were not a friend of Emily’s.’

The post prompted messages of support and thanks from thousands of readers. Abigail Glover wrote: ‘Poor Emily. I hope her “friends” realise how irresponsible they were.’
