HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN, 90 ESTIMATED WEALTH: £344 MILLION

HOW SHE MADE IT: Her Majesty is by no means the richest woman in her own realm. Her personal fortune is estimated at £344 million, according to calculations by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index last year, including a £60million investment portfolio, £130 million she inherited from the late Queen Mother and a stamp collection worth more than £60million.

The Queen also has assets worth around £20 billion, including Buckingham Palace, the Royal Art Collection and the Crown Jewels, held in trust for future generations.

The Queen is paid a ‘Sovereign Grant’ each year by the Crown Estate — £40.1 million in 2015/16. It was boosted by just under £14 million from property rental and charges to visitors to Windsor Castle and other venues. That equates to just over £148,000 per day. HOW SHE SPENDS IT: Courtiers point out that the Sovereign Grant is not the Queen’s personal income but covers the upkeep of palaces, staff and other costs. And many would feel the Queen is good value. Over the past decade The Crown Estate has returned more than £2.3 billion to the Treasury.
