TONE DOWN YOUR MAKE-UP

MAKE-UP can enhance young skin but, as we age, it can just accentuate fine lines and look caked-on. I wear mascara and, if I’m going out in the evening, I might use Lancome’s Touche Eclat (£25, Boots) for a subtle glow on my cheekbones. A layer of eyeshadow in natural tones can brighten eyes, too. But thick eyeliner, bright lipstick and heavy concealer should all be avoided. Keep mascara to brown shades, as black can look stark on an older face.

DON’T CUT OUT CARBS

A LARGE part of how quickly we age — both in terms of how we look and how we feel — is to do with what we eat. Eating unprocessed foods from all the food groups makes me look and feel fantastic — and I eat carbs every day! Eat plenty of fruit and veg alongside breads, potatoes, grains, proteins (eggs, fish, lean meat) and dairy (cheese, milk, yoghurt), and your body will thank you for it.

DIY TOOTHPASTE

BAD teeth are easily avoided. I brush my teeth at least twice a day for a good few minutes. Making your own toothpaste can leave teeth feeling dentist-clean and looking bright white. Use coconut oil (used in traditional Ayurvedic tooth cleaning), baking powder and a drop of peppermint essential oil.

GO LOW-MAINTENANCE IN MY 20s, I spent so much money on creams, tonics and serums for my skin and hair. Now, I know that all I need to keep my skin clean is Johnson’s Baby Bath (£1.50, Tesco). It’s designed for babies’ delicate skin and eyes, so it won’t strip your skin of any essential oils. Go lowmaintenance with your hair, too. Try not to wash or brush it for a couple of days. This keeps it in healthy, youngerlooking condition. NEVER WEIGH YOURSELF

STAYING a healthy weight and keeping fit is one of the most important ways to look young. I was brought up to enjoy good food and not to eat between meals. So many people judge their body and fitness by weight alone, but measuring body fat and waist size gives a clearer picture of health. Reduce your body fat and improve fitness simply by running or walking in the fresh air every day.
