Salmond issues referendum threat
ALEX Salmond has issued a threat to the UK Government over a second independence referendum.
He warned Theresa May and her ministers if they fail to respect a Holyrood vote against Brexit it could lead to a re-run of the 201 vote.
Mr Salmond, the SNP’s international affairs spokesman at Westminster, was speaking yesterday after Scotland’s Lord Advocate argued that the Scottish parliament should be given the right to vote over leaving the EU.
James Wolffe acted on behalf of the SNP Government at the Supreme Court last week – and said MSPs need to be consulted before Article 50 is triggered.
In the Sunday Herald newspaper, Mr Salmond said if Holyrood is given a vote over leaving the EU and it voted against Brexit it would ‘pile pressure’ on the UK Government to work out a deal for Scotland to stay in the single market.
Mr Salmond added: ‘If the UK Government ignores the Scottish parliament then that makes another independence referendum, as the First Minister has said, highly likely.
‘The UK Government has got a choice: they can either respect the wishes of Scottish people or face Indyref two.’
But Adam Tomkins, Scottish Tory constitution spokesman, said: ‘This inflammatory rhetoric serves no one, but is typical of the former first minister.’
