THIS IS WHAT 57 LOOKS LIKE

- BY FLORENCE SCORDOULIS

Angie Kaley lives and works with her husband in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, where they own a hairdressing salon. Married for 36 years, the couple have two daughters and one grandchild.

PUT YOUR HAIR FIRST

HAVING spent more than 30 years working as a hairdresser, I have seen at first hand the difference a good cut and colour can make. A sharp style of any length works wonders when it comes to taking years off. And as long as you maintain it regularly, hair dye is another fantastic short cut to redefine your image. It may seem extravagant to visit a salon every six to eight weeks, but trust me: spend money on your hair and everything else will fall into place.

EXERCISE TO FEEL GOOD

MANY women suffer from low self-esteem during the menopause. I found that exercise could be a wonderful antidote to this — it’s my secret weapon to feeling fantastic on the inside and out. Nothing beats the rush of endorphins. It is important to make your workout as varied as possible, though. For example, swimming is great to maintain your figure, while the mindful breathing in yoga and Pilates helps you stay positive.

ASK THE EXPERTS

I AM a fashion blog addict! The beauty blogosphere is a goldmine of information on the latest trends. By staying up to date, I not only feel younger, but can gain practical advice on how to look younger. I am also constantly amazed by the tips I get from visitors to my salon. Knowledgesharing is key. I am a firm believer that women should help each other.

WEAR STRUCTURED CLOTHES

YOU might expect a woman of my age to steer away from fitted clothing. However, at 4 ft 11 in, I have found that this look is particularly flattering for a petite build and height. If you want to wear more floaty fabrics, make sure you pair them with something figurehugging so you can still see your shape. For this, I find that black skinny jeans and a fitted top work well as a block-colour base for more flowing over-garments.

THE 80:20 RULE

I SWEAR by an 80:20 approach — where you eat clean, nutrient-dense foods 80 per cent of the time and leave room for indulgences 20 per cent of the time. I stick to porridge for breakfast, a gluten-free lunchtime wrap, a light evening meal and I never snack. But on weekends I treat myself to a delicious three-course meal out with friends — and never think about calories. It’s worth it!
