‘Worst’ win is source of satisfaction for Obadeyi

- FRASER CLARKE at Somerset Park

GOALSCORER Tope Obadeyi says he takes comfort from the fact that Ray McKinnon’s title chasers still won on Saturday despite their ‘worst performance of the season’. The English striker struck what proved to be the winner in the first half, racing clear on the counter before rounding the keeper to slot the ball home. But although undefeated in their last ten league matches, United were far from at their best and had to withstand heavy pressure as Ayr laid siege to Cammy Bell’s goal. Ross Docherty and Paul Cairney went agonisingly close for the hosts, while James Adams saw his effort fly over the bar from inside the six-yard box when it looked easier to score. Former Kilmarnock forward Obadeyi paid tribute to his defensive team-mates and knows how crucial a hardfought three points could be come the end of the season. ‘It definitely wasn’t one of our greatest performances. Football-wise, it was probably our worst,’ said the 27-year-old. ‘I don’t think we strung many passes together but these are the games you need to win if you want to challenge for a league and, thankfully, we’ve done that and can move on. ‘At half-time, we knew we weren’t at it and the manager gave us a kick up the backside. The second half wasn’t much better, to be honest. ‘I don’t know how many corners they had but the boys at the back defended them very well. We got the clean sheet and a victory. Not the prettiest but we got the points and that’s the main thing.’ Obadeyi showed terrific pace and power for his goal, evading desperate lunges from the Ayr defence as he helped United stay with Hibs at the top of the table. The striker admitted he’s been working on his one-on-ones. ‘We do a lot of finishing with the attacking players after the training sessions,’ said Obadeyi. ‘I like to think, one-on-one, nine times out of ten I can find the back of the net.’
