Son of Scotland legend Hastings set to sign deal with Warriors

- By ROB ROBERTSON

ADAM HASTINGS, the son of 1990 Grand Slam legend Gavin, is on the verge of signing for Glasgow Warriors. Negotiations are at an advanced stage to sign the 20-year-old fly-half from Bath for next season. Although Finn Russell is contracted until May 2018, it looks inevitable he will leave when his contract ends, or possibly even before. Hastings, whose uncle is former Scotland centre Scott Hastings, is looked upon as his heir-apparent. The SRU have been pushing hard to bring Hastings north of the border as they acknowledge there is a desperate need for a young top-class fly-half to be involved with both Glasgow Warriors and the Scotland national side. The only specialist backup No 10s to Russell at Warriors are Hagen Schulte and Rory Clegg, who have started just three games between them this season and look certain to leave in the summer. At Scotland level, Russell is far and away first-choice No 10 with Duncan Weir of Edinburgh a distant second. An approach for

Hastings’ services was made by Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend after discussion with Dave Rennie, who will replace him at Scotstoun next season. They decided to make the move after Hastings impressed them with his performances with the Scotland Under-20 team and on the run-outs he has had with the Bath first team. Hastings was educated in Edinburgh before moving to Millfield, the former school of Welsh rugby legend Gareth Edwards, in Somerset at age 16. He was spotted by Bath playing for his school and after a spell in their youth academy, he was handed a professional contract and has trained daily with the first team over the past two seasons. Ironically, Bath are one of four teams who have offered to buy out the final year of Russell’s contract only to have their approach rebuffed by the SRU.
