British tourist’s terror as five die in Mexico music festival shooting

- By Daniel Bates

A BRITISH tourist yesterday told of running past the blood covered bodies of victims after a shooting at a music festival in Mexico left five dead.

Charlene Grant, an artist manager from London, dropped to the floor in ‘sheer panic and terror’ as a gunman opened fire at 2am. She then ran for her life.

Drugs gangs were thought to be behind the attack at the BPM festival in Playa Del Carmen, a resort popular with British tourists.

Mexican officials said a gunman entered the Blue Parrot nightclub and exchanged fire with another person inside.

Four people were shot dead, three security guards and a Canadian festival organiser. A woman died in the stampede caused by the gunfire. At least 15 people were injured.

Miss Grant said: ‘We thought the gunshots were firecrackers at first, then everyone went down and shots were being fired.

“People were in panic as we didn’t know if it was indiscriminate shooting or terrorists. After lying on the ground for 15 minutes we tried to escape over a fence, but it was too high.

‘Eventually we were led out and ran for our lives. I saw bodies on the ground and people covered in blood.’

Amid the carnage, Glasgow DJ Jack Revill, who is known as DJ Jackmaster, tweeted: ‘Someone has come into the club in Playa Del Carmen and opened fire.’

Videos posted on social media showed people running through the street in terror as somebody shouted: ‘He’s got a gun.’
