IN AN EMERGENCY...

-

‘IN THE event of a heart attack, the person will probably be conscious,’ says Lucy Wilkinson, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation. ‘Whereas with a cardiac arrest they are unconscious.’

WHEN somebody collapses, first check them. If they’re not responsive and not breathing, their heart has stopped working and they are having a cardiac arrest.

CALL 999, then do hands-only CPR (basic CPR does not involve mouth-to-mouth).

LOCK your fingers together, knuckles up. Then push down on the chest 5cm-6cm (2in).

PUSH hard and about two times a second, to the beat of Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees. Don’t worry about hurting someone. A cracked rib can be mended — concentrate on saving the life.
