It’s time stars like Madonna stopped preaching

-

To all the Bob Geldofs, Madonnas, Richard Bransons, lily allens, Russell Brands and the rest of you very rich people who own houses around the world and occupy them only for a muchneeded break from the rigours of being over-rewarded for doing what you enjoy, thank you so much for thinking of the ordinary person when it comes to expressing your outrage over Brexit, the election of Donald Trump and so many other issues dear to your hearts. It’s reassuring to know you have the common person’s interests at heart. It’s heartwarming to see you set yourselves up as champions of the people when democracy doesn’t quite work as well for you as you might wish. as a very ordinary person, who cocks a deaf ear when you stray from acting, singing and just being very rich, into the world of politics and world affairs, may I make a humble suggestion: please give all your wealth to charities and other worthy causes. Just keep what you need and have just the one house and maybe an occasional holiday in Skegness. Do this and we ordinary people will see that you’re not just preaching at the rest of us who are too stupid to see the wood for the trees: we’ll be able to take you seriously and see that you’re really just one of us. If this is something you’d prefer not to do, then please stick to what you do best: acting, singing and making money, and avoid preaching the smug ‘we know better than you’ rhetoric in which you all seem to enjoy indulging. I find it stomach churning. JOHN MANSFORD, Langdon Hills, Essex.
