Can fish oil diet help heal burns?
HIGH doses of omega 3 fats (found in oily fish and nuts) may help as an early treatment for burns, according to a study in the journal Clinical Nutrition.
Doctors at the National Centre of burn Patients in Uruguay gave 92 patients a diet that was rich in fish oil within 24 hours of their injuries.
burn victims given this diet had reduced inflammation on their burns (which, in turn, helped speed their recovery), as well as a reduced risk of infection.
The patients spent, on average, a week less in hospital.
It’s thought a compound in omega 3 fatty acids affects receptors in the cells which make hormones that regulate inflammation.
