An empty jar? That’s 29p extra, please
IT’S a supermarket offer that left shoppers scratching their heads.
Waitrose customers are seemingly being asked to pay extra cash – for absolutely nothing.
The store chain was ridiculed on social media after retailing empty jam jars at £2 each – 29p more than a jar full of Bonne Maman conserve.
Shopper John Kilbride, from Glasgow, noticed the discrepancy earlier this week and posted the pictures online, attracting more than 5,000 likes on Facebook.
He wrote: ‘At Waitrose you can buy an empty jam jar for £2 or an identical one full of jam for £1.71. You decide.’
Some consumers joked that it showed the supermarket was the ‘preserve of the wealthy’, while others commented the product should be re-labelled as ‘Waitrose bottled fresh air’.
A Waitrose spokesman said that the price difference was only the result of a limited offer on the full 13oz jars.
‘Our Bonne Maman conserves are on a temporary promotion and are great value for money,’ she added.
Last year, Waitrose caused hilarity after a customer spotted tasting notes for super-strength lager Carlsberg Special Brew describing it as ‘full-bodied’ and ‘fruity tasting’.
But Twitter users joked that the 9 per cent ABV drink is favoured by those more concerned with becoming inebriated than a pleasant drinking experience.
