So , who left Ken Barlow on brink of death?

- By George Odling

AFTER 57 years on the cobbles, Ken Barlow has had plenty of time to make enemies.

And one of them seems to have finally run out of patience after he was found at the bottom of the stairs in an episode of Coronation Street last night.

Many shocked viewers assumed he had suffered another stroke after his recent ill health. But in a gripping twist tomorrow, the ITV soap will launch a ‘whodunnit’ after police reveal he was hit on the head and pushed.

Those with an axe to grind include crooked builder Pat Phelan, played by Connor McIntyre, who Ken, played by William Roache, accused of doing a botched job on his kitchen.

But any one of the Barlow clan could have been responsible for the attack, as police found the family have many skeletons in their closet. Ken’s own children are high on the list of suspects. Tracy Barlow, played by Kate Ford, who has already been convicted of murdering Charlie Stubbs, has more than one motive for killing her father, who had recently refused to lend her money to buy the flower shop premises.

Ken’s former alcoholic son Peter seems to have cleared his act up but has always had a fractious relationship with his father. And last week Ken told Sinead Tinker to abort her unborn child so his son Daniel, the father, could fulfil his dreams of going to Oxford University, giving her reason to want to harm him.

Roache, 84, said even he was left in the dark about his character’s attacker at the time, and had only become aware now, weeks after the scene was filmed.

He added that Ken ‘can’t remember a thing’ about the attack. The actor previously joked he thought he would be written out of the show after he saw the script but once he found out Ken would recover he was thrilled with the storyline.
