Long to rein over us... riding royals in their 90s

- By Rebecca English Royal Correspondent

THE Queen turns 91 next month and the Duke of Edinburgh 96 in June.

But age has never slowed either of them, as they showed yesterday when they spent time out with their horses around Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip, joined by two female grooms, looked relaxed as he took the reins for a brisk trot on his carriage through the streets of Windsor.

The Queen, meanwhile, appeared as confident as ever as she took one of her favourite ponies, Carltonlima Emma, for a gentle hack around her estate with members of her staff.

Although she does not ride as regularly as she used to due to her age and a niggling knee injury, the monarch is loath to give up the pastime she has adored since she was put on her first pony as soon as she could walk. She has, however, made a few small allowances for her age. Most notably, she now prefers smaller Fell ponies, renowned for their steady temperament and sure-footedness.

But the one aspect of her riding that has remained unchanged is her refusal to wear a hard hat.

Dressed in jodhpurs and cherry red riding boots yesterday, she instead had a patterned scarf tied around her head.
