Spotting the dangers

AEROSOL deodorants are a popular product for teenagers as their bodies begin to change around puberty. Around 50 per cent of youngsters use them by the time they are 11.

But customers are warned not to use them in confined spaces because the sprays can contain butane and isobutane.

Isobutane is generally safe, but the highly-flammable butane is regarded as one of the more harmful volatile substances to inhale. If not used in moderation both substances are known to have side-effects including headaches, breathing difficulti­es, nausea and even mood swings. Inhalation can cause the larynx to go into spasm, blocking air supply to the lungs.
