Now he tells us! Dave ’never liked EU’
DAVID Cameron has suggested he is in fact a Eurosceptic – despite campaigning to remain in the EU.
In a speech at an event in Ukraine that appeared at odds with his Project Fear campaign in the lead-up to last June’s referendum, the former PM said he disliked the EU flag and parliament.
Mr Cameron also defended his decision to call the EU referendum. However he admitted it was ‘not the result I sought’.
Speaking at Kiev’s National University after Theresa May triggered the start of Brexit negotiations, he said: ‘I think it is worth understanding that Britain always was uncertain, in fact opposed to the idea of the deeper and more integrated political union.’
And he admitted he felt the same way about European institutions, saying: ‘I led the campaign to stay in and I didn’t like the European flag and the European parliament.
‘We were always uncertain about that political union element.’ He added: ‘I was passionate about my side of the argument, I fought as hard as I could, but I knew if I lost I would have to think about resigning.’
Mr Cameron is said to have been invited to speak at the event by billionaire tycoon Victor Pinchuk, whose company supplies pipes to the Russian energy giant Gazprom.
Mr Cameron has made a series of lucrative speeches across the world since his resignation. It is not known whether he was paid for the latest appearance.
