WITH Brexit to negotiate and a country to run, you’d think Theresa May would have no time for going to the gym.

But not only does she have a weekly session as the first item in her diary, her fitness regime is one that few can manage.

It appears the Prime Minister enjoys weekly ‘Crossfit’ sessions with coach Lee Carnaby. The 60-year-old is fitter than ever thanks to the regime, said to be so brutal that some competitors are often sick mid-workout.

Mrs May works out with Mr Carnaby who is based in Reading, a ten-minute drive from her Berkshire home.

A source said: ‘Theresa sees Lee once a week, and loves it. She is incredibly dedicated and sessions are built into her agenda; she refuses to miss them unless she is out of the country.

‘Lee has been doing a lot of squat work with Theresa, in addition to vigorous HIIT (high intensity interval training) sessions which raises her heart rate through the roof, but burns fat spectacularly.

‘Lee is also a Crossfit specialist and incorporates some of this into her workouts, with weights and heavy resistance training. Theresa looks and feels amazing.’

Mr Carnaby, who charges £45 an hour, declined to comment on his famous client’s progress last night. On his professional networking page on LinkedIn, it states: ‘Lee is a very experienced coach ... and has operated his own personal training business since 2005.

‘His clients have included professional footballers, MPs and ex-special forces as well as amateur athletes and the general public.’

Mr Carnaby, who also has a diploma in the science and management of health and fitness, is a certified Crossfit coach at levels one and two.

The discipline is known to be one of the toughest in the fitness industry, and gyms often stock a sick bucket for participants in need. Mr Carnaby also says on his website that ‘his passion is changing people’s lives and transforming both people’s physiques and their perception and enjoyment of exercise’.

In 2013 Mrs May revealed she had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after it was claimed a two-stone weight loss was part of a ‘political makeover’.

Unlike type 2 diabetes, which she was initially told she had, type 1 cannot be controlled by diet and tablets. As a result she must inject herself twice daily for the rest of her life. Speaking about her condition at the time, she said: ‘It was a real shock and, yes, it took me a while to come to terms with it. The diabetes doesn’t affect how I do the job or what I do. It’s just part of life... so it’s a case of head down and getting on with it.

‘I’m a little more careful about what I eat and there’s obviously the injections but this is something millions of people have.’

‘Sends her heart rate through the roof’
