AND FINALLY

Yes, you can get through tough times

-

THE world is so full of worry and horror it’s often insupportable. Yet private problems still loom large — and recently we’ve faced some family stress. When my daughter was younger (enduring long years of physical problems), my mantra was: ‘We can find a way through this.’ And, indeed, we usually could, although it was rarely easy. Today, those seven little words of determination are as useful as ever.

So is the sense of gratitude I mention so often. Tuesday marked seven weeks since my hip operation and I was so happy when my consultant said I’m doing well — even if I do walk rather like a large doll.

Then, I was delighted to open a package containing the pretty, flowery, folding walking stick I’d bought online, which means I can return all the NHS equipment I’m thankful to have borrowed. On the same day, given the six-week all-clear, I hopped into my car and turned the key. Independence has returned! Thus, small benefits suddenly seem large.

Then came the gift of this lovely email from reader Mrs L: ‘I am a regular reader of your column and have been inspired many times by your wisdom.

‘There are many similarities in our lives, we are a similar age, both have lost a baby, but are fortunate to have a son and daughter and we have devoted parents, who have always been there for us.

‘I particularly enjoy “And Finally” and was delighted to read that your son and daughter had expressed the same sentiment on their Mother’s Day greetings as mine and that our sons chose identical cards!

‘Life throws us many ups and downs and it has been amazing that at times of great stress for me, a reader’s letter has been published which has also been relevant to me and your response has been so helpful. I hope that you continue your page for many more years.’

Honestly, I’d be grateful to, Mrs L — as long as there are flowery walking sticks to keep me upright.
