Cummings and Cav out injured

-

BRITISH cyclist Steve Cummings faces surgery after sustaining a fractured collarbone, scapula and sternum during a crash which saw him abandon the Tour of the Basque Country. The 36-year-old Team Dimension Data rider had to quit the Vuelta al Pais Vasco on stage four. Cummings was set to lead the team at Liege-Bastogne-Liege but is now out, like team-mate Mark Cavendish, who has an ankle injury. Team doctor Jarrad van Zuydam said: ‘The scapular fracture extends into the joint meaning that Steve will likely need surgery to ensure an accurate reduction. ‘If all goes well, we can expect to have him on a trainer in two weeks’ time with a gradual return as pain allows.’ DAVID MURDOCH secured a place for Great Britain’s men’s curling team at next year’s Winter Olympics after victory in his final match at the World Championships at Edmonton, Canada. Scotland’s 7-6 win in an extra end of their final group game against Russia guaranteed one of eight automatic berths for Pyeongchang, and avoided a further qualifying tournament. CARDIFF DEVILS are intent on making ice hockey history by securing the Grand Slam with victory in the Elite League play-off finals this weekend. After landing the Challenge Cup, Erhardt Conference and Elite League trophies, Devils are two wins away from becoming the first British side to claim four pieces of silverware in a season.
