Street knife attack ‘was not random’
A MAN who slit his own throat carried out a ‘targeted’ assault just moments before turning a knife on himself, it was revealed yesterday.
Panic erupted among shoppers and office workers in Glasgow on Thursday afternoon when the man was seen running around brandishing two knives.
He stopped in West Nile Street, where he ‘calmly’ slit his throat before being peppersprayed by police.
The 33-year-old died around three hours later from his wounds.
Police last night issued a fresh appeal to anyone who saw the incident unfold.
A Glasgow City Council community warden, who tried to intervene, was also injured during the attack and later received treatment for an arm injury.
The 33-year-old victim of the initial attack was taken to Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary, where he was still receiving treatment for shoulder and arm injuries yesterday.
Detective Superintendent Laura Thomson said: ‘We know that the initial attack was targeted – it was not random; it was planned and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.
‘However, although we have had a great response from members of the public who were there at the time, we need people to come forward with any information that may assist the investigation.’
