Why Aldi ‘Hoops’ taste the same as Hula Hoops

- By Kate Pickles

THEY look, taste and fit on the ends of your fingers the same way as real Hula Hoops.

And it transpires there’s a good reason why Aldi’s own brand ‘Hoops’ seem as good as the original – they are made in the same factory.

A series of packaging blunders has forced Hula Hoops owner KP Snacks to reveal it also makes the crisps for the budget supermarket chain – which are 61p cheaper.

But manufacturers maintain the two products are made to different recipes and are on different production lines.

The revelation came to light after dozens of people claimed to have found packets of Aldi’s version of the crisps inside their multipacks of Hula Hoops and vice-versa. Customer Dean Goldsmith tweeted: ‘Proof there is no difference between own brands and the expensive “named” brands... Hula Hoops in an Aldi multi-pack!’

Father-of-two Graeme Clapp also found Hula Hoops inside his multipack of Aldi’s Snackrite Hoops. ‘I was amazed it was stuffed full of branded original Hula Hoops,’ the 35-year-old from Cinderford, Gloucestershire, told The Sun.

‘I immediately called out to my wife and asked jokingly, “Have you put Hula Hoops in the Aldi Snackrite multi-pack?” “No” she replied. “They must have left the factory that way”.’

The mix-ups have led many to question whether the products are identical, despite the price difference.

While Aldi sells a ten-pack bag of 25g packets of its Snackrite Hoops for 99p, a seven-pack of 24g bags of Hula Hoops normally sells for around £1.60.

KP Snacks said: ‘KP Snacks does make the product for Aldi at the same site as its own Hula Hoops brand, although the products are made on different lines and to different formulations.’ It said it was investigating the ‘unfortunate’ packaging error. Aldi declined to comment.
