Now dog biscuits make Jake a wrap star!

- By Peter McGlone

AFTER a hard day chasing seagulls away from the quayside and a long night singing karaoke in the local pub, no one deserves a rest more than Jake the harbour hound.

Now an award-winning slogan created in his honour for KitKat encourages him to do just that – Jake-a-Break.

And the four-year-old Border and Irish terrier cross is auctioning off his special prize of a one-off bar of the biscuit on eBay to help raise funds to splash out on a new lifejacket for his summer duties.

It was back in March that Jake hit the headlines for his antics at Arbroath harbour in Angus. Working alongside his owner, Carl Nielsen, from Carnoustie, the dog has been waging war against invading gulls since he was a puppy.

Wearing his distinctive life jacket, Jake barks and howls at the birds when they get too near to the boats and has become a famous face in the town, even howling along with tunes at karaoke nights in his local pub.

He has now been given the honour of his own KitKat wrapper complete with his picture after Mr Nielsen won a competition with his suggestion of the ‘Jake-a-Break’ slogan for the popular biscuit.

The snack is up for auction online to kit out Jake with a new lifejacket. Harbour assistant Mr Nielsen, 39, said: ‘He absolutely loves the attention and even more people are coming to the harbour to meet him – some even made the journey especially from Glasgow.

‘He enjoys all the fuss but he knows that when his lifejacket goes on he is at his work.

‘He takes his role seriously. He chases away the seagulls which can be quite aggressive. Some of the birds are bigger than him.’

He entered the KitKat contest with the phrase – a twist on the famous ‘Have a break, have a KitKat’ advertising slogan – and was delighted when the biscuit with the personalised wrapper arrived from KitKat manufacturer Nestlé.

Mr Nielsen added: ‘Jake is needing a new lifejacket so I thought I would put the biscuit up for auction. I want it to hold some basic first aid kit, even something small like an aspirin could make a difference to someone if they take ill. Some of the money will also go to the Dogs Trust charity.’
