Emeli swaps star car to drive like Daddy

- By Sam Walker

SCOTS singer Emeli Sandé has ditched her £105,000 sports car for a secondhand hatchback – just like her father used to drive.

The 30-year-old singer – worth around £6million – snapped up a hybrid BMW i8 after the success of her 2012 debut album Our Version of Events, which sold 23million copies and spawned hits such as Daddy, Heaven and Next to Me.

But since moving back to Alford, Aberdeenshire, from London, she has swapped it for a used Volvo 480 – the same model her parents Joel, 55, and Diane, 56, once drove. The motor can be bought for £600 online. The singer said: ‘The BMW was really fancy. But then I thought it wasn’t me. My dad used to have an old-school turbo Volvo 480, so I bought one and I’m going to pimp it up. I’ve got this guy who can spray-paint it champagne white with gold rims and put in a sick sound system. It’s an acquired taste, but I feel like this is the real me.’

Miss Sandé – who moved to Scotland aged four with her Zambian father and English mother – also revealed she is dating again. She split from Serbianborn husband Adam Gouraguine in 2013 and a relationship with British rapper Hypo ended in February.

She said: ‘Right now I feel so ready, I want to start a relationship with someone, as I feel so comfortable in myself.

‘I want to get married and still believe in it. Turning 30 made me realise I want to find love and I want a family.’
