- Daily Mail Reporter

SIR Sean Connery yesterday paid a touching tribute to fellow Bond star Sir Roger Moore as he told of his sadness at his friend’s death.

The Edinburgh-born actor – the original 007 – joined others who have portrayed the superspy to honour Sir Roger, who died this week at the age of 89.

Sir Sean, 86, said: ‘I was very sad to hear of Roger’s passing.

‘We had an unusually long relationship by Hollywood standards that was filled with jokes and laughter. I will miss him.’

Sir Roger – the longest-serving Bond – died in Switzerland after a ‘short but brave battle with cancer’, his family said.

Current Bond Daniel Craig shared a picture of him with the actor and referred to the theme song of Sir Roger’s The Spy Who Loved Me by writing: ‘Nobody Does It Better.’

Pierce Brosnan, who like Craig has played Bond four times, described Sir Roger as ‘magnificent’ and also shared a photograph on Instagram of the pair together.

He wrote: ‘It is indeed with a heavy heart that I hear the news of your passing this morning. You were a magnificent James Bond and one that led the way for me, the world will miss you and your unique sense of humour for years to come.’

Sir Michael Caine posted on Twitter: ‘I am devastated today at losing one of my oldest and closest friends ROGER MOORE, my world will never be the same again.’

Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson said Sir Roger’s ‘legacy shall live on through his films and the millions of lives he touched’.

Jane Seymour, who starred with him in 1973’s Live And Let Die, remembered him as ‘funny, kind and thoughtful to everyone’. In a statement, Sir Roger’s three children – Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian – said they were supporting his wife, Kristina, and that a private funeral would be held in Monaco.
