MI5 must learn from intelligence failure, says PM
MI5 needs to review its handling of intelligence linked to the London Bridge attack following revelations about the killers’ known terror connections, Theresa May said yesterday.
The Prime Minister said she recognised public concerns about how the terrorists were able to carry out the atrocity.
Meanwhile, Boris Johnson tore into the security services and the police, saying they faced questions over how plot ringleader Khuram Butt, 27, could slip through the net. The Foreign Secretary said the authorities had to respond to public demands to know how he was able to ‘commit atrocities’ despite appearing on a TV documentary with known extremists.
Home Secretary Amber Rudd then appeared to slap down Mr Johnson, saying it was not for her or him to assess how Butt slipped through the net. Mrs May also yesterday condemned Donald Trump’s Twitter attacks on London Mayor Sadiq Khan as ‘wrong’ – but said his state visit to Britain should go ahead.
The US President fired off a series of critical tweets over Mr Khan’s handling of the London Bridge terror attack, mocking the mayor’s comments that there was ‘no reason to be alarmed’ over armed police patrolling the streets.
