GEMMILL’S KIDS SET UP AULD ENEMY BATTLE

-

SCOT GEMMILL’S youngsters clinched a fascinating last-four meeting with England in the Toulon Tournament after two goals from Rangers striker Ryan Hardie saw them come from behind to beat Indonesia. Just two days before their senior counterparts face off at Hampden, the Under-20s teams will go head-to-head in Fos-sur-Mer tomorrow for a place in the final of this prestigious competition in France. Gemmill’s team, who defeated Brazil last Saturday, went a goal down in Vitrolles yesterday after finding it tough without injured star Oliver Burke. But Hardie’s double, including one from the penalty spot, saw them make their first semi-final appearance here in 23 years after finishing best runners-up in the three groups. ‘I’m really pleased for the players to get over the line,’ said Gemmill. ‘Indonesia were really determined to try to embarrass us. We made it hard for ourselves conceding the first goal and if we hadn’t have won, it would have been a huge disappointment. So I’m pleased we’ve got what we deserved. ‘Even though most of our players have played first-team football, they’re still young and learning to play at really high concentrated levels.’ Indonesia took a shock lead with their first goal of the tournament when Nottingham Forest’s Alex Iacovitti gifted possession to Putra Saghara in the 24th minute and he slotted home. Hardie (pictured with Craig Wighton) struck seven minutes before the interval when he curled in a superb finish from the edge of the box. The Scots were then hugely grateful when captain Anthony Ralston was clipped in the box in the 64th minute. Hardie, who converted the penalty, said: ‘To bounce back after the opening defeat to Czech Republic and get two massive wins against Brazil and Indonesia shows you the courage of this group of players.’ SCOTLAND (4-3-3): Ruddy; Ralston, Iacovotti, McCart, Taylor; McCrorie, Nesbitt (Holsgrove 41), Wilson; Frizzell (Thomson 69), Hardie (Jules 80), Wighton (Sammut 75).
