I had killer sepsis ...but GP gave me diarrhoea remedy

A SCOTS mother has revealed how she almost died of sepsis after believing her symptoms were nothing more than a virus.

When Jacqueline Lomoljo fell ill she thought it was a bug brought on by her hectic life and her GP sent her home with rehydratio­n salts.

But just five days later she was rushed to hospital and her family were warned she may not survive – a priest was even called to her bedside.

However, the 46-year-old recovered from the condition, in which the body’s response to an infection causes it to attack its own tissue and organs, and she yesterday urged others to be aware of the symptoms.

Mrs Lomoljo, from Hamilton, Lanarkshir­e, said: ‘I can’t believe how quickly the sepsis took hold. I remember thinking, I’m going to die.’

The bank worker, who has a seven-yearold daughter, Ana-Maria with her delivery driver husband, Christophe­r, 37, fell ill in December. ‘I’d been feeling tired, but I thought it was a virus,’ said Mrs Lomoljo,

After finishing work for Christmas, she headed to bed but the next morning she began vomiting. ‘My memory of the next few days is really hazy,’ she said. On Boxing Day, her worried husband took her to an emergency GP, where she was given Dioralyte, a rehydratio­n treatment for diarrhoea sufferers.

Throughout the day, however, her condition worsened.

Mr Lomoljo phoned NHS 111 to describe his wife’s symptoms – by this point, they included muscle pain, shivering and sickness – and they told him to take her straight to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride, where she was admitted to intensive care. ‘I
