McKAY DELIGHT AT REUNION WITH WARBURTON

- MARK WILSON

BARRIE McKAY insists he is looking forward to playing football in his favoured style after being reunited with Mark Warburton at Nottingham Forest. The Scotland cap has signed a four-year deal with the English Championship club, as first revealed by Sportsmail, after completing his move from Rangers for a fee in the region of £500,000. Cardiff were among the competitors for McKay’s signature but the 22-year-old had his heart set on working again with former Ibrox boss Warburton. ‘The manager and David Weir were a massive factor in me joining the club,’ admitted McKay. ‘Having played for them at Rangers, they know my game inside out, so they know the way I like to play football and it will be really good to join up with them again. ‘It is obviously a big step for me to come down to England to play for a massive club like Nottingham Forest. ‘I want to show what I am made of. I am really up for the challenge. Rangers is a massive club, but this is a massive club. This is a big challenge for me and a step forward in my development.’ McKay became a key player during Warburton’s tenure, but fell out of favour following Pedro Caixinha’s arrival. By then, the winger had rejected a contract extension, with Caixinha later moving to land new wide men in Dalcio and Daniel Candeias. McKay was then ordered to train with the Under-20s to create a sour end to his time with the club. Despite that, he paid tribute to the support he received after rising through the youth ranks. ‘I like to create chances,’ continued McKay. ‘I am a winger who will cut inside and try to create for my team-mates. ‘The fans were brilliant at Rangers and I am sure they will be here as well. At any team, if you have the backing of fans, it gives the team great confidence.’ The switch to Nottingham will also see McKay link up with ex-Hibernian striker Jason Cummings, formerly a team-mate in the Scotland Under-21s. McKay added: ‘When he comes out of his shell you will see the real Cummings, he is a good player and a lively character.’
