‘Welcome to Hell’: Violent mob disrupt G20 summit

- By Christian Gysin and Kate Pickles

VIOLENCE erupted in Hamburg last night after tens of thousands of hard-Left protesters descended on the city ahead of the G20 summit.

Police used tear gas and water cannon as they clashed with up to 1,000 black-clad rioters hurling bottles and missiles.

Many of the protesters wore handkerchiefs across their faces and waved banners with slogans including ‘Welcome to Hell’ and ‘Smash G20’.

A leaked police report had revealed that up to 8,000 of the estimated 100,000 people attending antiG20 protests this week were believed to be hardcore anti-capitalist activists, with the authorities predicting a march yesterday would turn violent.

World leaders, including US president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin, had been arriving in Germany’s second-largest city for the summit to discuss everything from trade and climate change to migration and terrorism.

Some 20,000 German police officers, most in full riot gear, were already on the streets backed up by a fleet of armoured vehicles, water cannon, helicopters and surveillance drones, before they clashed with demonstrators at about 8pm local time.

In the chaotic scenes that followed, many protesters were injured and it is understood that a number of arrests were made.

The unrest came after officers had already clashed with protesters on Tuesday night.

Protesters are believed to be planning to try to stop world leaders getting into the summit today.
