Davies vows to drown out team Taylor

- By JIM BLACK

OHARA DAVIES reverted to type again yesterday as he launched a verbal outburst at home hero Josh Taylor ahead of their Commonwealth title fight tomorrow night.

On his previous visit to Glasgow, at the end of May, to promote the super-lightweight bout at Braehead Arena, the Londoner appeared to be keen to cultivate a different image.

But any notion that he had changed was quickly dispelled when he delivered a series of insults at the traditional pre-fight head-to-head.

Davies, 25, labelled Taylor and his management and coaching team, including former world champion Barry McGuigan, ‘a bunch of bums’ before also turning on a group of the 26-year-old Edinburgh boxer’s supporters.

He further asserted that most of the assembled company were ‘fools and idiots’ before telling one individual to ‘shut your mouth’.

‘I really want to shut him and his coach’s mouths,’ he said in reference to Taylor and Shane McGuigan. ‘He’s a bum and I think his coach’s a bum. His team are bums.

‘In fact the whole of Cyclone Promotions that are here are all bums.’

On the surface, at least, it looked to be a deliberate attempt to try to get under Taylor’s skin. If so, it did not have the desired effect.

But Davies insisted: ‘None of it was a wind-up. I came here to say what I wanted to say because I’m my own boss and I do what I want to do.

‘That’s what I felt like saying, so that’s what I said. I’ve done this time after time and I’m just doing the same thing, only I’m getting paid more this time.

‘I call everyone in my weight class who is a threat to me a bum and I’m here to shut him up.

‘I’ve got no issues coming here to get booed. This game is not about who is loved or who is the best person. It’s about fighting and it’s about winning.’
