Saints add to Euro woe

- MARK WALKER

TOMMY WRIGHT admitted his St Johnstone side lack quality as they capped a disastrous week for Scottish football by crashing out of the Europa League to ten-man FK Trakai. Just two days after Rangers’ shameful Luxembourg exit,

the Perth side also fell at the first hurdle — losing to a late goal in Lithuania after failing to take advantage of Arunas Klimavicius’ 57th-minute dismissal. And Wright, whose team failed to turn their dominance into goals last night after losing the first leg 2-1 in Perth, says he needs an injection of personnel if his side are to qualify for Europe again next season. ‘It’s a frustrating time for managers when they lack players,’ he said. ‘I know what I need to add to the squad. I know we need more quality. ‘I’ve been here four years and I’ve worked extremely hard to make sure this club performs at the highest level and get the best out of what we have. ‘The squad is crying out for a little bit of help and hopefully we can get that because it’s frustrating as a manager. ‘This was a game we should’ve won. I think we made a few mistakes early on, but then we totally controlled the game. ‘We have lacked that final ball over the two legs and we gave away stupid goals. ‘Overall I can’t fault the players’ efforts, just that final ball. ‘We lacked quality and ruthlessness to capitalise on the amount of opportunities we had in good positions. ‘We wanted to at least come away with a draw and salvage pride. They weren’t better than us. They can enjoy their night and they deserved it because they made fewer mistakes. ‘The damage was done last week, but this was a decent performance away from home. ‘We were the better side. But when we had possession we didn’t make the most of it.’
