Family’s heartbreak over couple’s death

Police refuse to rule out ‘murder and suicide’

- By Charlotte Thomson

THE family of a couple found dead in a potential murder-suicide told yesterday of their anguish.

The bodies of Karen and William Flett, both 56, were discovered at their home in Aberdeen on Wednesday.

Police and paramedics were called to the end terrace house at about 10.25pm but it was too late to save them.

The couple had been married for 37 years. In a statement yesterday relatives said: ‘We are completely devastated and as a family we will help each other through this extremely difficult time. We would like to thank those who have passed on their wishes and offered support. We ask that we are left in private to come to terms with what has happened.’

Neighbours said there had been no sound of a disturbance at the house and they only learned of the tragedy after police arrived on the quiet street.

On Thursday, road outside the couple’s home in Cornhill Terrace was taped off as forensics officers searched inside the property and took photos of Mr Flett’s taxi. The silver Peugeot was parked at the front of the house that the doting grandparent shared with his wife.

Police continued their inquiries yesterday. They refused to rule out a murder-suicide.

Mr and Mrs Flett’s two sons, Darryl, 33, and 35-year-old Barry, live near the scene of the tragedy and had grown up in the family home. The eldest son recently opened up a hair salon with his wife Kirsty.

One of Mrs Flett’s sisters, Lynn Simmers, was believed to have flown from her home in Spain to be with her family on Thursday night.

The two deaths have left neighbours feeling stunned.

One local, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘Everyone is wondering what happened.

‘We thought there had been a robbery. We used to see Willie a lot but we didn’t see much of his wife. He was a nice chap.’

Councillor Lesley Dunbar said: ‘It is distressing for families and neighbours.’

Police refused to say if any weapon was involved.

Detective Inspector Allen Shaw said: ‘We are not seeking anyone else in relation to this.’

Airport firm Comcab, where Mr Flett worked, did not want to comment yesterday.
