Murray and Djokovic could both now face lengthy layoffs. For now, Murray will remain world No 1 but says he will not hold on to the honour for much longer. ‘I don’t think anyone has stayed at No 1 their whole career,’ he said. ‘It always comes to an end. I haven’t played well enough this year to deserve to stay there. If it doesn’t happen by the end of this tournament, it will by the end of the US Open.’ On his injury, he added: ‘The whole tournament I’ve been sore. I gave it my all. ‘I’ll get the best advice I can, then stick with that. If it means taking a few weeks’ rest, then so be it. ‘I’ve been dealing with it for a very long time. As you get older, things are tougher to manage than they are when you’re younger. There’s a bit more wear and tear there. ‘I’m sure I’ll be able to get through it. I just need to do all the right things.’ Djokovic, also 30, is likewise considering time out and said: ‘I guess the break is something I have to consider. It’s the elbow that has been bothering me for over a year-and-a-half. It’s unfortunate I had to finish Wimbledon this way.’ Meanwhile, Jo Konta is set for her semi-final against Venus Williams today and Murray has told the 26-yearold to go on to become a champion, saying: ‘I hope she goes on to win the tournament.’ Murray’s conqueror Querrey will face Marin Cilic in his semi after the Croat beat Gilles Muller 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, 5-7, 6-1.
