Daniel the mayor in the lion’s den

-

DURING the late Forties, a grand fete was held in my home town of Hertford every Whit monday. It included travelling funfairs, plus a circus and sideshows. There were races for children and adults, and tug-o’-war contests. The fete was so popular, people who had moved away always returned to meet old friends and neighbours. In 1947, the mayor, Alderman Daniel Dye in full regalia, declared the fete open and — for the next three hours — presented awards to race winners. By 5pm, a rumour began circulating about the mayor. I could not believe what I heard, but yes — it was true! Among the sideshows was a tent with a large lion called Lenny in a cage: Daniel was to go inside the cage on his own, wearing his chain of office. many people paid their sixpence entrance fee to see this. A local newspaper reporter and photographer were there to record it. When the mayor arrived, the crowd cheered, then shouted: ‘Dan, don’t risk it!’ It seemed a very dangerous thing to do. On opening the cage door, Lenny the Lion (who was comfortably sprawled out on his large rug), simply opened his eyes and raised his head. He then appeared to engage the crowd with a smile. Once Lenny realised it was not his keeper with his food, he curled up once again and closed his eyes. On reflection, I thought that someone in the know must have whispered in Daniel’s ear, reassuring him that Lenny would not be a threat. The lion had grown old and fat (due to a lack of exercise) and over the many years had become tame. Cheers to Daniel who, apart from being an excellent mayor, was also a good showman!
