The miracle that gave my little boy his mother back

- By Jacob Polychronis

A TODDLER can sap the energy of even the most active of adults, as most parents will know.

But for Fiona Davies, dealing with her son would wipe her out to the point she would be falling asleep mid-play as her kidney condition left her drained.

But now the 35-year-old is full of energy and cannot wait for playtime with her son James, five, thanks to a ‘miracle’ organ donation.

Mrs Davies, from Airdrie, Lanarkshire, was diagnosed with the hereditary condition polycystic kidney disease (PKD) when she was 17. PKD is the most common genetic renal disorder in which cysts develop in both kidneys and result in progressive failure.

The birth of James in 2012 caused her kidney function to decline and eventually fail in October 2016.

She said she began to panic, thinking she did not have much longer to live and lamented the quality time lost with her son.

But after being listed for transplant in March this year, she received news only three weeks later at her son’s fifth birthday party that a suitable deceased donor had been found.

Mrs Davies, who had her transplant in May, said: ‘I feel so much better than I felt before. I have much more energy, I can concentrate and I’m mentally not dealing with the pressure of knowing I’m in kidney failure.’

ing to raise a young son was an ‘overwhelming’ experience.

She said: ‘There were times when I would be playing cars with James and I couldn’t physically stay awake. He would tell me to open my eyes, which were because I was just so tired.’

Now Mrs Davies has backed a campaign to increase the number of people on the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Only 45 per cent of the Scottish population are on the donor register, while one person a day dies in the UK while on a transplant waiting list.

Mrs Davies will return to work on Monday as a human resources officer.

She said her husband Barry, 36, was ‘delighted’ adding: ‘He’s just very grateful that someone would donate. It’s nothing short of a miracle. ’
