Menopause? It’s the last taboo, says Lorraine

- By Sam Walker

AS a long-serving daytime TV presenter, she is used to grilling guests about difficult topics.

Now Lorraine Kelly has tackled what she calls ‘the last taboo’ by revealing her battle with the menopause.

The 57-year-old Scot said going through ‘the change’ had been her toughest challenge, darkening her famous sunny disposition and plunging her into depression.

Now, having come through the ordeal with the help of her TV presenter friend Dr Hilary Jones, she has decided to break her silence and devote a section of next Monday’s Lorraine show to the topic.

The mother of one said: ‘It’s the last taboo. We still don’t talk about it, even with our own girl- friends. I mean, it was madness that it didn’t even occur to me that the menopause was to blame.

‘Women need to talk about it and not just sit at home wondering what’s wrong with them, getting depressed. It’s natural.’

Life got brighter after Dr Hilary prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) patches, which give the body the oestrogen it has stopped producing.

Reflecting on the menopause, Miss Kelly said: ‘Some women find it liberating. Others feel sad that it’s the end of a chapter of their lives. But it’s the start of a new chapter, too.’
