SPFL AND CELTIC HAVE EMERGED FROM EBT SAGA IN GOOD SHAPE
THE SPFL and Celtic have expressed disappointment at the SFA’s refusal to grant an independent review into the Rangers Tax Case. But this is one defeat unlikely to cause sleepless nights at Hampden or Parkhead. Neil Doncaster took soundings from the SPFL board before sending a letter to his SFA rivals requesting an independent review into the way the EBT saga was handled. When the SFA said ‘no’, they looked like an organisation with something to hide. Job done. Peter Lawwell can now face Celtic’s Annual General Meeting with a clear conscience, as well. The SPFL champions never
really wanted to go after titles won by Rangers in the EBT years. But the chief executive had to be seen to be doing something. By turning down a request for an independent review into the way they handled the whole business, fans of Celtic and other clubs now regard the SFA as a shifty, discredited, unaccountable cabal. Which, when push comes to shove, isn’t a bad result for the SPFL. Not bad at all.
