Does a high-fat diet hold key to long life?
MOST people view fat as the enemy, but a study in the journal Cell Metabolism suggests eating a ketogenic — or high-fat — diet could increase longevity and may also improve physical strength.
The research, on mice, found that their lifespan was increased by 13 per cent on a high-fat diet, compared with those fed a diet high in carbohydrates.
The mice had quality of life into old age, with better memory and muscle function.
Researchers from the University of California, Davis said this could open a new avenue for ‘possible dietary interventions that have an impact on ageing’.
