MEDICAL treatments found in the larder. This week: Sugar for pain, cystic fibrosis and ear infections

NEWBORNS often have to undergo procedures in hospital, such as heel lances for blood sampling.

But sugar can ease their pain, according to a review of almost 7,000 children published by the Cochrane Neonatal group. Taken orally, it releases endorphins, which act as natural painkillers.

Mannitol, used in gum, is used to treat cystic fibrosis, where lungs produce abnormally thick mucus. When inhaled, it causes water to enter the airway and dilute mucus, making it easier to cough up, according to a University of Liverpool study.

Meanwhile, birch sugar, or xylitol, is used in a syrup to prevent otitis media (middle ear infections). It blocks the growth of bacteria that cause the infection.
